Drooling over career daydream? Try it on!

Q. The last few years have been really hard in my industry. I find myself increasingly daydreaming about opening a surf shop on some distant tropical island or a restaurant anywhere but here. My friends tell me Im having a mid-career crisis. Is there any way to check out daydreams to see if they are ridiculous fantasies or possible careers?

A. Yes, what I tell my clients who are considering far-flung dreams is to consider borrowing the career they fantasize about. Borrowing means do the research to find out who in the world is actually doing this career. Then, on your next vacation, go hang out with the people who are doing what you think would be your perfect life.

Apple claims ownership in key Kodak patents on digital camera technology

Apparently Eastman Kodaks bankruptcy filing this week wasnt a surprise to anyone: just hours after Kodak filed in New York, Apple sought authority from the court to enter into a $950 million postpetition financing facility secured by security interests in and liens upon substantially all of Kodaks assets. In essence, Apple is claiming to have ownership over key Kodak patent assets, including US Patent No. 6,292,218. According to Apple, this patent has been pivotal in driving Kodaks recent patent licensing strategy, providing over $3 billion in associated revenue. The 218 patent has been asserted by Kodak against Sony, JVC, Samsung, LG, RIM, Fujifilm, and even Apple the patent claims priority...

Reid bows to online protest

After Wednesdays one-day  blackout of Wikipedia, Craigslist and scores of other sites to protest the House of Representatives Stop Online Piracy Act and its Senate companion, Protect IP Act; after Googles collection of a reported 7 million petition signatures; after seven co-sponsors of the Senate bill repudiated it and dozens of other rejected it, attention turned to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a supporter of the legislation. What would he do in response to the historic digital outcry?

On Friday morning, Reid settled the matter. In light of recent events, read a statement sent out by his office, I have decided to postpone Tuesdays vote on the PROTECT IP Act.

Youth Olympics: Athletes get cooking, lap up career advice

INNSBRUCK – Between intensive training and tough competitions, the life of a young athlete often has little room for anything else, but at the Winter Youth Olympics, sport for once is not the only priority.

Career advice, cooking classes and dance workshops are there to provide future champions with new skills and allow them to switch off.

Mistakes are sometimes made where we put the athlete in a cocoon and think we will make a champion out of them because we dont let them do anything other than develop their sporting performance, said International Olympic Committee executive director Gilbert Felli.

And we realised that those athletes who see other things, experience...
